Analyzing VOCs from the Great Barrier Reef

Australia's Great Barrier Reef (GBR) stretches over 2300 km and is composed of over 3000 individual reef systems. The health of the reef therefore often comes under international scrutiny. Hilton Swan from Southern Cross University in Australia has been investigating volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the Great Barrier Reef using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). He recently spoke to us about this work. read more

Nontargeted Metabolite Profiling in Next-Generation Plant Breeding: A Case Study in Malting Barley

The power of nontargeted metabolite profiling is illustrated in a study focused on the determination of molecular markers in malting barley that are predictive of desirable malting quality for brewing applications. The metabolite extraction, detection, and analysis methods are high throughput and reproducible, and therefore, this approach represents a practical addition to the plant breeder's molecular toolbox. read more
