Top Story: The LCGC Blog: Unanticipated Benefits of Keyword Searching the Scientific Literature
When a scientist needs to search through scientific literature, which is the preferred search engine? While there is quite a bit of variety in available search engines, LCGC Blogger Kevin Schug has a definite preference. Here’s what it is, and why.
DIOXIN 2014 in Madrid
The 34th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) – DIOXIN 2014 – will be held in Madrid, Spain from August 31 to September 5, 2014. The Dioxin symposium is the leading international conference for scientists, regulators and companies to present recent advances in all areas of Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants, with the aim to protect human health and ecosystems from POPs. LCGC TV: Frederick Lynen on the Challenges of Developing a HILIC-based SPE Approach to Analyze Biological Fluids
A single drop of blood represents a complex mixture of biological compounds including phospholipids, proteins, and salts. Frederic Lynen of Ghent University in Belgium discusses the possibilities of a HILIC-based SPE approach to remove phospholipids from blood samples, its applicability to other organic molecules, and how it benefits the chromatographer in practice.

MS The Practical Art: Radical Mass Spectrometry as a New Frontier for Bioanalysis
In this article, the authors discuss radical MS, an increasingly important area of MS development and the application to bioanalysis. At the current stage, most of the research is performed by a small set of academic groups; it is likely that these types of fundamental studies will attract more attention and even be commercialized in the near future.

The Benefits of Thermogravimetric Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry
The combination of a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) with mass spectrometry (MS) to analyze evolved gases is a well-known technique. However, TG–MS does not allow differentiation between gases that evolve simultaneously; TG combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TG–GC–MS) can allow for a more complete characterization.

Slower Py-GC–MS Unravels Cross-link Relationship in Amber
Scientists from the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa, Canada, have developed a novel pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (py-GC–MS) method to characterize the structure of Class I amber that could be applied to other natural polymeric structures. Published in the journal Analytical Chemistry, the methoddemonstrates how a slower py-GC–MS technique can be performed to analyze natural polymers that contain cross-linked chemical moieties.
