Erectile Dysfunction (American College of Physicians PIER)
As epidemiologic studies indicate that certain medical conditions and lifestyle variables correlate with erectile dysfunction (ED), the risk that a man will develop ED can be reduced by avoiding or eliminating adverse behavior that predispose to the problem. Apply preventive measures in men with identifiable risk factors, including smoking cessation, discontinuation of recreational agents with erectolytic effects (e.g., alcohol), maintaining ideal body weight, engaging in regular exercise and avoiding sedentary lifestyle, hyperlipidemic and hypertension control for cardiovascular disease, and hyperglycemic control for diabetes mellitus.
Besides prevention, this activity includes screening in men with identifiable risk factors; confirming the diagnosis in men who have a consistent inability of approximately 3-months' duration to attain and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory intercourse; consultation for diagnosis; initiating non-drug adjunctive therapies before or in conjunction with specific pharmacotherapeutic interventions; considering drug therapy early in a stepwise approach to ED; patient education, including about the mechanisms that underlie ED; consultation for management; and follow-up visits to assess responses to therapy. » Go to this activity |
