Adolescent Reproductive Issues (American College of Physicians PIER)
Physicians have responsibilities to their adolescent patients, within the confines of legal and ethical guidelines, to educate, counsel and/or refer them to others when issues arise regarding contraception, abortion, and pregnancy.
As covered by this activity, adolescent patients should be told at the inception of the physician-patient relationship of the physician's approach to issues of sexual education, contraception, abortion, and referrals for abortion. Besides being aware of state and federal laws relevant to adolescent reproductive confidentiality and informed consent, the physician must be well aware of the numerous and sometimes serious complications involved in providing care to sexually active adolescents and the potential for conflict between the adolescent and parent(s).

Adolescent Consent and Confidentiality (American College of Physicians PIER)
Today's adolescents have much more legal decision-making authority over their own lives, including making medical decisions. All states now have statutes allowing some categories of minors to consent to care, and the right to confidentiality accompanies the ability to consent in almost all instances.
This activity covers indications, implementation, and complications of adolescent consent and confidentiality, as well as patient education. It also includes guidelines.
