Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of COPD
Continued progress in the basic and clinical sciences, therapeutics, technology, and surgery is leading to increased understanding and improved diagnosis and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The purpose of this course is to update practicing primary care clinicians on the guidelines for care and the clinically relevant advances in pulmonology and to provide useful, evidence-based information on the diagnosis and treatment of COPD.

Upon completion of this interactive case involving the initial visit of a middle-aged woman presenting with a persistent cough, participants should be able to select appropriate strategies for the accurate diagnosis of patients with COPD; identify conditions that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of COPD; recognize staging of COPD severity using spirometry; and select appropriate management strategies for COPD based on staging and the patient's sign and symptoms. » Go to this activity

This interactive case complements the one above. Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to identify issues to be assessed during a routine COPD follow-up visit; list the various causes and manifestations of poor treatment adherence in COPD; choose appropriate treatment strategies in COPD and determine when pharmacologic treatment escalation is appropriate; recognize when pulmonary rehabilitation is an appropriate intervention for the COPD patient; and explain appropriate ongoing interventions for smoking cessation. » Go to this activity
