Early Detection and Treatment of Dementia within the Primary Care Setting
By current estimates, 1 in 7 older Americans suffer from cognitive, behavioral and functional impairments caused by dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent form, accounting for approximately 60% of all dementias, followed by vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson’s disease dementia, frontal-temporal dementia, and mixed dementias.

After completing this first of a 3-part video-based activity that identifies distinguishing characteristics of the common dementias, participants should be able to administer an evidence-based tool to improve early recognition of dementia and explain a potential value of a timely and accurate diagnosis of dementia. » Go to this activity

Early Detection and Treatment of Dementia within the Primary Care Setting (Part 2)
After completing this second part, participants should be better able to identify distinguishing characteristics for Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontal-temporal dementia, and list the imaging techniques useful in differentiating specific types of dementia. » Go to this activity

Early Detection and Treatment of Dementia within the Primary Care Setting (Part 3)
After completing this third part, participants should be able to recognize potential risks and benefits of combination therapy in patients with dementia and to implement pharmacotherapy regimen for the treatment of behavioral symptoms of dementia. » Go to this activity

Recognition, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Bipolar Spectrum Disorder in the Geriatric Population
A tendency to ascribe to dementia the symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) adds to the challenge of diagnosing these two conditions in the geriatric population, let alone understanding the distinguishing characteristics that differentiate BD and MDD.

This activity involves expert analysis, along with an interactive question-and -answer session, that covers current gaps in knowledge and performance regarding the management and treatment of BD and MDD in elderly patients. » Go to this activity
