VTE prophylaxis in the surgical patient (American College of Physicians PIER)
The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) differs based on the type of surgical procedure performed and the underlying patient comordibities. Participants will appreciate the high incidence of VTE in selected surgical patients who do not receive prophylaxis; identify clinical risk factors and comorbidities that increase the risk of postoperative VTE; understand interventions to decrease risk; be able to educate patients for the postoperative period; be able to evaluate patients promptly who report signs or symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). » Go to this activity

VTE risk following nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma
As in this interactive case involving a 59-year-old male recently discharged from the hospital following an open nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma, participants should be able to stratify patients by level of VTE risk; demonstrate awareness of current evidence, practice guidelines, and quality measures for optimal VTE prophylaxis; implement and/or promote adherence to evidence-based VTE prophylaxis to ensure continuity of prevention; apply educational tools to advocate for policies and protocols for VTE prevention across at-risk patient populations and practice settings. » Go to this activity

VTE risk following ischemic stroke
As in this interactive case involving a 67-year-old African-American male admitted to a rehabilitation facility following an ischemic stroke, participants should be able to stratify patients by level of VTE risk; demonstrate awareness of current evidence, practice guidelines, and quality measures for optimal VTE prophylaxis; implement and/or promote adherence to evidence-based VTE prophylaxis to ensure continuity of prevention; apply educational tools to advocate for policies and protocols for VTE prevention across at-risk patient populations and practice settings. » Go to this activity
