With a patient whose historically problematic adherence has already affected her visual function, consideration to nonadherence recidivism should temper a normal bias toward medical rather than surgical intervention.
Upon completion of this interactive case involving a decision to recommend cataract surgery to address the key issues of a patient with a history of poor adherence to medical therapy — a developing cataract, advancing glaucomatous damage, and ongoing issues with adherence — participants should be able to:
• Analyze the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of current IOP-controlling agents, including prostaglandin analogues, which are commonly used in patients with glaucoma
• Develop strategies to better monitor patient adherence to prescribed treatment regimens for the management of glaucoma
• Discuss common risk factors such as family history and lifestyle issues that contribute to the development of glaucoma.
