Managing Ocular Surface and Lid Margin Disease in Patients Undergoing Cataract and Refractive Surgery
In patients undergoing cataract or refractive surgery, a high prevalence of ocular surface and lid margin disease – blepharitis, dry eye, and ocular allergy – holds possibilities for adverse impact on postsurgical outcomes.
After completing this activity, participants will be better able to describe the prevalence of blepharitis and ocular surface disease and the potential impact of these conditions on postsurgical outcomes; list the elements of a presurgery eye examination; summarize the current evidence supporting aggressive treatment of blepharitis, dry eye, and allergy in the preoperative setting; describe intraoperative treatment and postoperative rehabilitation to reduce the risk of postoperative complications in patients with ocular surface disease who undergo cataract or refractive surgery; and review monitoring strategies to improve management during the postoperative period.
