Urinary Incontinence in Women (American College of Physicians PIER)
Initiate non-drug therapy in all patients with incontinence regardless what other interventions they may eventually need. Non-drug therapy is safe, inexpensive, and may be as or more effective than drug therapy especially for urge and mixed incontinence. Before considering medical or surgical treatment of urinary incontinence in women, recommend diet and lifestyle modifications and behavioral techniques to decrease the frequency of incontinence, including fluid and dietary management, improving mobility and access to lavatory, toileting assistance, bladder training, and pelvic muscle rehabilitation. Evidence shows the latter two along with caffeine restriction are the most effective in reducing continence severity, although more research is needed to evaluate each method individually.
In addition to non-drug therapy, this activity addresses prevention, screening, diagnosis, consultation for diagnosis, hospitalization, drug therapy, patient education, consultation for management, and follow-up.
