Role of Cutaneous HPV in Common Skin Conditions: Current Viewpoints and Therapeutic Options
New research continues to uncover additional subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) and identify mechanisms by which the virus interferes with cellular homeostasis. Although the oncogenic potential of HPV, as it relates to cervical carcinoma, is widely accepted, its role in the pathogenesis of other disorders is less clear. An increased understanding of the role of HPV and the cellular changes associated with external genital and perianal warts (EGW), nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), and actinic keratosis (AK) is evolving.
This video-based activity explores issues relating to the role of cutaneous HPV and the correlation of the virus and its pathogenesis with EGW, NMSC and AK. Upon completion, participants should be better able to analyze the epidemiology of HPV infection and its pathogenic correlation with common skin disorders; summarize the putative role of HPV in the development of EGW, NMSC and AK; and discuss the molecular modulating effects of approved topical therapies for AK and EGW.
