Ectopic Pregnancy (American College of Physicians PIER)
Minimizing damage to the fallopian tubes by pelvic infection and by surgical trauma decreases the risk of ectopic pregnancy. A reduction in the number of women with STDs has been accompanied by a reduction in the number of ectopic pregnancies. (Evidence shows a significantly higher number of patients with ectopic pregnancy had positive Chlamydia antibody titers.) Tubal surgeries, such as occlusion or recanalization, increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. (Ectopic pregnancies after tubal sterilization can result from the development of a tuboperitoneal fistula in the proximal stump, allowing sperm to enter the peritoneal cavity and fertilize the ovum.)

In addition to prevention (decrease risk by preventing fallopian tube pathology), this activity includes diagnosis (consider the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy in all women with abdominal pain with or without bleeding and all women using a progestin-only pill or IUD for contraception with a positive pregnancy result), consultation for diagnosis, hospitalization, non-drug therapy (consider surgical management), drug therapy (consider therapy with methotrexate), patient education, management consultation, and follow-up issues.
